Antigua Guatemala

Porta Hotel Antigua · 8a Calle Poniente 1 · Conf #120284

Ranjit & Varnita

Tuesday 28 · todayWork morning, drums, dinner · rain 2–4 PM+

Built around one hard constraint, the three-hour work block. Varnita's yoga sits inside it, so nobody is waiting on anybody. Drums and the massage are both indoors and cover the wet window.

  1. 6:00 AM
    Gym · in the hotel
Ceiba Spa's fitness room. Ask the desk what's actually in there before you plan the session. If it's thin, Antigua's Gym on 6a Calle Poniente is 4 min, opens 5 AM, Q35 cash at the door, full racks and free weights, gets busy after 7.
  2. 7:30 AM
    Coffee · Artista de Café
2 min, opens 7. Espresso Q20–30, avocado toast Q45–49. Together or separately, doesn't matter; Varnita just needs to be at the studio by 8:25.
    Map
  3. 8:30 AM
    Varnita · yoga at YogAntigua
Tuesday class 8:30–9:45. Studio is upstairs inside Mesón Panza Verde, 5a Avenida Sur 19, 4 min walk. Walk in and pay, mats and blocks provided, bring cash. It's up a spiral stone staircase and easy to miss from the street. Same building as tonight's dinner.
  4. 8:30 AM
    Ranjit · work block, protected
Through to 11:45. The room is quietest. If you need out of it, Serve Hope Café on 6a Calle Poniente is 4 min with proper desks, plugs and a rooftop, or Rooftop Antigua at 6 min for all three volcanoes and free wifi with a slow kitchen.
  5. 12:15 PM
    Simple lunch · Franca
1a Avenida Sur 6, about 10 min. Small pizzas people call the best in town, real carbonara, steak burger. Fast, not a production. If you want it Guatemalan and closer, Madre Tierra at 7 min makes tortillas at the door and does tacos de lomito.
  6. 12:45 PM
Optional · the short walking loop
45 minutes, five stops, Central Park to La Merced and back. Self-paced, in the separate walking tour file. This is the only window today it fits.
  7. 2:30 PM
Drum lesson · Mundo Musical G
One hour, roughly $15–25, book same day on WhatsApp. Indoors, which is the point, this is the rain window. Ask for cumbia and son on kit. They use two addresses, the shop on 7a Avenida Norte and the teaching room on 4a Avenida Norte, so confirm which one on the message. This is the only music lesson this trip.
  8. 4:00 PM
Massage, both of you · Wellness Express Spa
Take the two-person offer on the flyer: 70 min full body deep tissue for both of you, Q350, about $45 total. Open 9 AM to 7:30 PM. Book on WhatsApp. Two things worth using: a free shower after, and a free shuttle that will collect you from the hotel, which matters at 4 PM because that is the tail of the rain window.
Four branches. 6a Avenida Norte #2 is the closest to you at about 6 min. The others are 7a Avenida Norte 13-A, 7a Calle Oriente 6-A and Calzada Santa Lucía Norte 17. Say which branch when you message.
If you want longer: 90 min deep tissue with reflexology and craneal is Q250 each, two hours Q300 each. The King Kong is 75 min four-handed deep tissue with reflexology and craneal at Q300.
  9. 6:00 PM
    Drink before dinner · SNUG
5 min, volcano views from the upper terrace. Low commitment, walk back and change.
    Map
  10. 7:30 PM
    Dinner · Mesón Panza Verde
Swiss-French kitchen, colonial rooms, candlelight, about $90–120 for two. 5 min walk. Reserve today, and on the same call ask whether La Cueva downstairs has live music tonight.
  11. 9:30 PM
Music, if you still want it
Nothing in town is billed as jazz on a Tuesday in July; the real jazz here is the Guatemala Jazz Festival in March and April. Closest in feel is Café No Sé, 10 min, candlelit mezcal bar with acoustic sets in the back room at 9:30 and no wifi on purpose. Las Palmas has a live band 7:00–11:30 but it's salsa. Cervecería 14 out in Ciudad Vieja has live music 7–9 and the best volcano views of any venue, 15 min by Uber.
Closed Tuesday

Caoba Farms, El Alquimista, La Nueva Fábrica, Nanik, Barriga Llena lunch service.

Wednesday 29Lake Atitlán · all day · driest+

You're handling the booking. This is what you'll want on the day.

  1. 6:00 AM
    Pickup at the hotel
Nothing in town is open at 5:45. Ask the Porta desk the night before for a coffee flask or fruit to take with you.
  2. 7:15 AM
    Breakfast stop · Restaurante Chichoy
Pan-American Highway at San José Chirijuyú. 4.5 across 6,400+ reviews, opens 6 AM. Mountain-lodge room, tortillas made in front of you, complimentary oatmeal to start. Order the desayuno típico or the chocolate natural. Clean bathrooms, small craft stalls. Katok, a few kilometres further at Tecpán, is the other classic on that road and equally good if your driver prefers it.
  3. 8:45 AM
    Lake viewpoint
Photos out over the caldera. Skipped if it's fogged in.
  4. 9:15 AM
    Boat to the villages
San Juan La Laguna is the one people rate highest: weaving and natural-dye cooperatives, honey, painters' galleries, walkable and calm. Several travellers on this route say they wished they'd traded a village for more time in San Juan. Say that to your guide on the boat rather than after.
  5. 12:30 PM
Lunch · depends which village you're in
Meals aren't included and aren't expensive. Carry all three.
  6. 7:00 PM
    Back in Antigua
You'll be tired. El Depósito is 4 min with live music 7–9, El Patio de la Primera has a set at 7:30, and Las Palmas runs its band to 11:30. Madre Tierra is open until 11 if you just want food.

Lunch on the lake

Utz Food · San Juan La Laguna
4.5 · daily 8–6 · second-floor lake view

The pick if you're still in San Juan. Ask for the upper deck. Fried mojarra and ceviche are what people come back for, good Antigua Cervecería beers on tap, fast service, souvenir shop downstairs.

Pita Sabij · San Pedro La Laguna
4.8 across 960+ · right on the water · takes cards

Middle Eastern. Hummus, falafel, pita out of the oven, tables over the lake. Best-rated food of the three villages. Alma nearby is the same idea a notch more refined.

Posada de Santiago · Santiago Atitlán
4.6 · big menu · tuk-tuk from the dock

The standard lunch stop for this run. Local fish done properly, homemade bread, second-storey deck over the water. El Maná on the public beach has the better view and a slower kitchen.

One timing note

The Xocomil wind picks up around midday and chops the lake, and most itineraries have you crossing well into the afternoon. Routine, the lanchas run it every day. But if either of you is prone to motion sickness, take something before the morning boat rather than after.

Thursday 30Wettest day · stay close+

Recovery day after the lake. Nothing is booked. Pull the anchor off the open list below and everything else is indoors or covered.

  1. Morning
MUNAG, or the full 90-minute walk
The museum is 5 min, on Central Park, free, opens 10. Guatemalan art walking backwards through revolutionary, colonial and pre-Hispanic, and worth it for the building alone. If it's dry, do the full walking loop first instead and save the museum for the rain.
  2. Afternoon
The open slot · cooking class or salsa
This is where it goes. Book it Wednesday night at the latest. Options and numbers are in the open list below.
  3. Alt
    La Nueva Fábrica
Contemporary art in a converted textile factory in Santa Ana, café built inside two old buses. Open Thursday, fully covered, 15 min walk or 5 min ride.
  4. Evening
Best music night of the week
The Snug has a live set 7–9 on the volcano terrace, 7 min. El Depósito 7–9, 4 min. El Patio de la Primera at 7. Antigua Brewing runs live music and a DJ 5–11. Las Vibras does a free salsa class 8–9 then the party, 7 min, which is the easiest way to get the salsa lesson done with no planning.
  5. Dinner
    Nanik or Welten
Nanik reopens Wednesday and is the most interesting cooking in town. Welten is the reliably romantic room. Both open Thursday.
Friday 31Flight 8:00 PM+
  1. 8:00 AM
    Breakfast · El Gran Café
5 min, opens 8, beans from their own finca, very few seats. Buy the coffee to take home while you're here, it's the best bag in Antigua.
  2. 9:15 AM
Check out, bags to the desk
Do this before anything else. Porta holds luggage all day.
  3. 9:30 AM
Guided walk, if you want one · Elizabeth Bell
Her Classic Cultural tour runs Friday 9:30–12:30, $32 each, meeting at the park office inside Café Condesa on Central Park, 6 min from you. Covers City Hall, the Mermaid Fountain, the Royal Palace, the cathedral ruins and the Jade Museum, finishing inside Casa Santo Domingo. Bell moved here in 1969 and worked on the city's first restoration team, which is the difference between this and the walk-ups near the jade factory. Confirm in writing it's her own guide, they occasionally hand bookings to a partner. Otherwise use the self-paced file.
  4. 12:45 PM
Lunch · La Fonda de la Calle Real
7 min, daily 9–9. Pepián, pipián, rellenitos. The last Guatemalan meal.
  5. 2:15 PM
Shopping · Nim Po't, then chocolate
7 min, daily 9–9. Big artisan warehouse, textiles and crafts, fixed prices, no haggling. Maya Cacao and Ek Chuah are both on the way back.

Walking tourSelf-paced file, or guided Friday+

Antigua is small, flat and signposted by its own grid, so you don't need a guide to enjoy it. What a guide adds is the why: why every building is one storey, why the plaza is arranged the way it is, why one church is intact and the next has no roof. Use the separate self-paced file, ten stops, ninety minutes, starts and ends at the Porta, with a forty-five minute short version and audio narration. Guided alternative is Elizabeth Bell on Friday morning.
